Repository metrics are context, not quality scores. Active installations measure adoption and can strongly reflect a plugin’s age and historical popularity. Ratings, recent updates and “Tested up to” metadata also do not guarantee modern code, error-free operation, security, feature completeness or suitability for a particular site. Why active installs don’t tell the whole story →

WP PlugIndex currently records MCP tool controller for WordPress version 1.0.2 as active, updated 2d ago and tested up to WordPress 7.1.

Overview

About this plugin

MCP Tools gives you one clean screen to control every AI tool your WordPress site exposes over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Review the abilities registered through the WordPress Abilities API, uncheck the ones you do not want, and click Save Changes. That is it — your AI agent only sees the tools you have approved, so it stays focused, fast, and safe.

The plugin also adds two ready-to-use WordPress content tools, Create Post or Page and Update Content Status, so an AI assistant connected over MCP can draft a page, publish a post, or move content to the trash without you leaving the chat.

Whether you run a blog, a WooCommerce store, or an agency site, MCP Tools keeps your AI integrations lean, fast, and predictable.

Why use MCP Tools?

  • Smaller context, better answers — Every tool an AI client loads costs context. Disable the ones you do not use and your agent spends its budget on your actual request instead of tool definitions.
  • One dashboard for every plugin — Tools registered by other plugins appear on the same screen, so you no longer hunt through settings pages to find out what your site is exposing.
  • Safe by default — Disabling a tool never deletes posts, pages, or any other content. It only removes the tool from connected AI clients, and you can switch it back on at any time.
  • Permission aware — Both bundled tools run with the permissions of the connected WordPress user. Authors cannot publish, and no one can touch content they are not allowed to edit.
  • No configuration files — Install, activate, tick the boxes. No API keys, no JSON, no code.

Features

  • Enable or disable any MCP ability from a single MCP Tools screen.
  • Lists tools from every plugin that registers through the WordPress Abilities API, grouped by namespace.
  • Tools added by this plugin are marked with a This plugin badge.
  • Disabled tools stay in the list, so you can turn them back on later.
  • Adds Create Post or Page for creating drafts, pending content, and published content.
  • Adds Update Content Status for moving posts and pages between draft, pending, publish, private, and trash.
  • Works with any MCP-compatible client, including Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and Cline.
  • Runs alongside WooCommerce MCP and other ability providers without changing their code.
  • Respects WordPress roles and capabilities — no permission bypass.
  • Translation ready and GPL licensed.

Two content tools included

Create Post or Page creates a new WordPress post or page and returns the post ID, status, admin edit URL, and public URL. It accepts a post type, title, content, excerpt, status, slug, and parent page ID. New content is a draft by default, and publishing requires publish permission.

Update Content Status changes the status of an existing post or page to draft, pending, publish, private, or trash. Setting a status to publish requires publish permission, private requires permission to read private posts, and trash requires delete permission for that item. Trashed content is restored automatically before a new status is applied.

Both tools only handle posts and pages. They do not create or modify WooCommerce products, orders, coupons, or other custom post types.

Who is it for?

  • Site owners connecting Claude, ChatGPT, or another AI assistant to WordPress.
  • Agencies that want a predictable, limited toolset for every client site.
  • WooCommerce stores using MCP to manage content alongside their catalog.
  • Developers testing abilities who need a fast way to toggle tools on and off.

Getting started

  • Install and activate the plugin.
  • Make sure the MCP Adapter module is installed and active.
  • Open MCP Tools in the WordPress admin menu.
  • Uncheck any tool you do not want to expose, then click Save Changes.
  • Connect your MCP client and start using the tools.

Only administrators can open the MCP Tools screen. All tools are enabled by default.

Requirements

  • WordPress 5.0 or later.
  • PHP 7.4 or later.
  • The MCP Adapter module, which provides the WordPress Abilities API and the MCP server endpoint. If it is missing, the plugin shows an install/activate notice on the settings screen.

Frequently asked questions

Does disabling a tool delete anything?

No. The tool is only removed from the tools available to connected AI clients. It stays in the list and can be enabled again.

Can I schedule a post?

Not directly. future is not an accepted status. Setting a future-dated post to publish makes WordPress schedule it and returns the new status future.

Why does a disabled tool still appear in the list?

So you can turn it back on. If the plugin that provides it no longer registers it, the row shows: This ability is disabled and is not currently registered.

Can I disable tools added by other plugins?

Yes. Every ability that registers through the WordPress Abilities API is listed and can be toggled from the same screen.

Privacy

MCP Tools does not send data to any third-party service on its own. It only reads the abilities registered on your site and stores your enabled/disabled choices in the WordPress options table.
